A man had to climb through his bedroom window to escape a house fire this morning.

The incident happened on Mayville Avenue, Leeds, at about 6am - crews from Leeds, Cookridge and Gipton attended the fire, which was confined to the kitchen of the property.

A fire service spokesman said: “We used six breathing apparatus and two jets, the male was helped out of a bedroom window and given oxygen therapy before being taken to hospital after breathing in smoke.”

Crews were still at the scene at 7.30am today.
