Leeds man dialled 999 and said he was dying after attack, murder trial jury told

Prosecutors claim Hisan Yaquob kicked and stamped on 32-year-old David Stead on Autumn Street in Hyde Park.

The jury was told Mr Stead suffered injuries including two broken ribs and a laceration to his spleen that caused fatal internal bleeding.

The court was told Mr Stead had a history of alcohol abuse and that he and his partner Dawn Edmonds were both drug addicts.

The jury heard they borrowed money at high interest rates and had outstanding debts totalling more than £900.

Opening the prosecution case, prosecutor John Elvidge said the attack happened at around 11pm on May 7.

Mr Elvidge told the jury that at around 3.15am the following morning Mr Stead contacted emergency services from his home on Harold Grove in Hyde Park.

Mr Elvidge said: “You will hear a 999 call and David Stead’s weak voice telling the operator he had had a kicking and was dying.”

The court heard paramedics arrived but were unable to save Mr Stead, who was prononced dead at the scene.

Mr Elvidge said loans were offered by “means of intimidation and threats.

Mr Elvidge added:“The defendant regarded Dawn Edmonds and David Stead with contempt, calling them dirty little smackheads.”

The court heard 26-year-old Yaquob lived opposite Mr Stead when he allegedly carried out the attack in May.

Yaquob, of Becket Park Drive, Headingley, denies murder.
