Controversial plans to demolish a historic Leeds building have been approved.
Tetley Hall and six other buildings off Moor Road, Far Headingley were sold to developers in 2006 for about £8million.
They had been used as student accommodation by the University of Leeds.
Pickard Properties submitted a planning application to redevelop the site in September 2011. They want to replace the former halls of residence with a four-storey residential care home, three blocks of 54 flats, two blocks of 14 town houses and converting stables into a detached house with landscaping.
Objections were received from local residents and a representation made to the planning committee meeting by Far Headingley Village Association, who are also against the plans.
They outlined concerns over the design of the proposed buildings and their height in relation to surrounding houses, loss of green space and a lack of adequate parking provision. But these objections were all overruled by the committee.
Jane Oakshott, who lives near the planned development said: “It’s something I feel very strongly about because
“I live right next door and used to live in Tetley Hall as a student and know how tranquil and beautiful it is.
“The site is precious and should be protected, the planned scheme imposes bother on the neighbourhood and gives nothing back.
“The site forms the green heart of the Far Headingley Conservation Area.”
She added: “There is no general objection to development of the site but this proposed scheme is too heavy, too big and completely insensitive to a very special part of Leeds’ heritage. We would like to see something more imaginative, something for the city to be proud of.”
Fellow resident David Hall said: “At the moment there is something like three acres of green space, that’s going down to about one acre, we do not believe that is enough for the number of people who will live there. People do not want to be trapped in confined living spaces, bringing up children with not enough space to play and surrounded by too many vehicles.”
Pickard Properties did not comment.
A spokeswoman from Leeds City Council confirmed the plans had been approved.
