Snappers were recently asked to submit pictures for a competition being run by Leeds City Museum ahead of the launch of the Changing Faces of Leeds photo exhibition.

A host of prizes were on offer for the winners, including the chance to have their images featured in the photographic showcase.

Hundreds of people sent in photos and today organisers revealed the names of the entrants who came out on top.

The winning snaps include a shot of 89-year-old former schoolteacher Maureen Lee at Victoria Park in Calverley during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

It was submitted by her daughter, Teresa, 46, who said: “I entered the competition as I loved the fact it was open to everyone and I put in this picture as I thought it would be nice to have pictures of older people of Leeds and also because I like the bright colours.

“We’re both really looking forward to the opening and seeing the other work in the exhibition as I am sure it will be an interesting selection.

“It was great that the picture was picked to be one of those on show and Mum was very surprised when I told her.”

Other winners include Elaine Taylor, who took a cheeky photo of her son Billy while shopping in Leeds, and University of Leeds student Su Shan Leong.

The work submitted by the entrants was saluted today by Coun Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council.

Coun Blake said: “The hundreds of photographers who entered this competition have really captured what’s at the heart and soul of Leeds and its culture and that’s the amazing people who live here.”

She added: “As we look towards our bid to be European Capital of Culture 2023, it’s those people who will be at the forefront of showcasing exactly what makes Leeds such a unique and exciting place to be.”

Changing Faces of Leeds gets under way at Leeds City Museum on Friday, February 5, and runs until early June.

It will feature fascinating images of Leeds people from the 1800s right through to the present day.

Members of the public can help decide which pictures fill the final few spaces by ‘liking’ their favourites on the Leeds Museums and Galleries Facebook page.

The People’s Choice vote runs until midnight on January 31.

The exhibition programme also includes workshops and events for visitors of all ages.
