A NEW group inspired by a radio show aimed specifically at runners is launched on Tuesday - the day the nation marks the 60th anniversary of Roger Bannister running the four-minute mile.

Keen jogger Gemma Rathbone has been hosting Running On Air on South Leeds Community Radio since March.

However, she’s hoping a new running group to supplement the weekly broadcast will encourage even more people to take up jogging.

“Since I took up running two years ago, my life has changed for the better in so many ways and I want to help other people find out for themselves that being active is enjoyable and hugely beneficial in all sorts of ways,” said Gemma.

“Running has become a way for me to manage mental health issues, make friends and explore the world and I hope the people of south Leeds will join me by tuning in and turning up each week.”

The new running group is open to all and will set off from outside the South Leeds Community Radio Station studios on Ashbrooke Park in Middleton every Tuesday at 12.30pm.

Sessions will be tailored to suit ability, starting with a gentle jog but working up to the 5k Cross Flatts park run later this year. A limited number of water bottles, running vests and running shoes will be provided thanks to donations from Lift a Finger and Up & Running.

Gemma added: “What’s really important is that people come along give it a go. It’s really simple to get started with running and I’m looking forward to sharing my passion.”

Meanwhile, the weekly Running on Air show will continue to be broadcast at 1pm on Mondays and can be heard online at www.slcr.org.uk.
