Cocoon is the name of both the Leeds-based firm and a product that are changing the face of home security.

The product is a single device that is about the size of a tennis ball and uses sound technology to monitor not just the room where it is placed but a whole house or apartment.

It is able – from one device, without the need for any extra sensors or wires – to ‘listen’ for subtle vibrations in the air that are caused by movement.

When it picks up any activity it deems out of the ordinary for the property, it sends an alert to the occupier’s smartphone using the Cocoon app – wherever he or she might be in the world.

Around 1,000 of the devices have been sold to 850 customers in 50 countries.

And the firm, which is based on The Calls, has grown from its original five founders to a team of more than 30.
