Leeds day of social action by young Muslims is a winner

Hundreds of toys, gifts and food items were collected for people in need across Leeds, as a group of young people from the Muslim community held a day of social action.

More than 50 volunteers came together as part of Sadaqa Day, a national initiative which was designed to help the needy, strengthen community relations and showcase shared values across the Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths at Easter.

Donations were collected at Makkah mosque in Hyde Park and boxed up into food-parcels which will be delivered to poor and vulnerable families in conjunction with the ‘PAFRAS’ charity.

In addition, 100 new toys - and cards made by youngsters - will be gifted to children in care in Leeds.

Children and young people also took part in clearing up unkempt green spaces across the city and the region.

Aisha Rashid, co-ordinator of Leeds Muslim Youth Forum and the Sadaqa Day Leeds team, said: “This year’s Sadaqa Day event was a huge success due to the partnership to Muslim organisations that brought it all together.

“We were humbled by the turnout of volunteers who joined us from other faith groups, making Sadaqa Day an incredible interfaith experience.
