Vandalism affects bus journeys in Leeds at least 10 times a week, it has been claimed.
In response to complaints about some drivers posted on the YEP’s Facebook page, one man posted a picture which showed the smashed windscreen of a bus.
Martin Miller said: “I fully appreciate people’s frustrations with late or missing buses and can only sympathise.
“Drivers don’t want to run late, we all have lives outside work, we want to get home on time to our families etc.
“There are many many reasons that buses don’t run to timetables.
“Traffic, temporary lights, accidents, passenger falls, insanitary buses (people being sick, urinating etc etc) vandalism (broken windows) [and] driver sickness.
“This picture [left] is just one instance of what we have to deal with day in day out. This was a friend of mine and fortunately he nor none of his passengers were injured.
“This happens at least 10-20 times a week.”
Comments readers left on our social media pages suggested that some drivers had a bad attitude.
But in an interview at the YEP offices earlier this week, the managing director of Leeds’s main bus operator First said that the majority of its drivers try to deliver what customers want.
He added: “We employ over 2,000 members of staff across West Yorkshire of which 90 per cent being made up of driver roles – they are the heart and soul of our business and without them, we wouldn’t be able to operate.
“We work hard to ensure our drivers are happy in their jobs and I have this week met with Unite Trade Union to provide an update on our continued support for our frontline team.”
