Leeds favourite Bar Fibre is celebrating 18 years of success with a huge party this weekend.
The event runs from today until Monday and is set to be one to remember, with the poster promising to give you the ‘ride of your life’.
The bar held a mini treasure hunt in anticipation of the party and hid five red envelopes across the city last week, which all contained a VIP invite. Those who found them were encouraged to share their photos on social media to claim their prize and spread the word about the birthday bash.
Owner Terry George has been involved in the Leeds club scene for more than two decades.
He said: “From the age of 17, I started out as a DJ in the Leeds club scene and made a career out of it for over 20 years.
“I spent many years at some of the biggest clubs such as Ritzy and Mr Craig’s. Back then, you couldn’t even wear jeans to a nightclub. For me, this meant that it would take opening my own venue to shake things up and take the first steps to modernise the city’s nightclub scene.”
After DJing at lots of different venues across Leeds, things started to change for Terry when he launched a gay night at Confetti in the Merrion Centre. The night was a huge success and Terry and his partner Michael Rothwell then went on to buy and run the Mr Gay UK competition. They then got involved with a telecoms company, which gave them enough money to invest in other projects that they felt passionate about.
“In the year 2000, myself, Shaun Wilson and my life partner Michael opened Bar Fibre. Our aim was to push the boundaries and bring people together in a safe environment regardless of sexuality. The rest is history.
“To this day, we still have a core set of customers who have been with us since day one. Alongside appealing to newer generations, Fibre has become more successful than we ever imagined. We still turn away as many customers as we let in!”
Terry opened Bar Fibre to create something new in Leeds and offer a unique nightlife experience that was inclusive for all, and that premise is still at the heart of what Bar Fibre does.
Described as a ‘four-floor super bar’ on its website, Fibre ensures it has something for everyone. The lounge is a warm, cosy area for relaxation, while guests can enjoy a VIP experience with luxurious booths in the lavish Penthouse, where you need a membership card or an invitation just to get in.
A huge investment in the last 12 months has also seen newly designed bars and modern furnishings to keep Bar Fibre cutting-edge and to enhance the customer experience 18 years later.
For the last three years, Fibre has also won the the Business Against Crime in Leeds (BACIL) award for Best Independent Venue and Best Night Time Security Team.
Terry said: “The longevity of our 18 years of success has always been down to knowing how to entertain people with brilliant creative concepts, hard-working staff and ideas that you simply just don’t see anywhere else.
“We are constantly reinventing the bar every three to four years to keep us at the top.
It’s 2018, and I never thought that we would still be picking up awards. The last 18 years have been a blast!”
