Leeds artists create new lettering at city station

Artists from across the city are showcasing their talent on a grand stage by updating the '˜LEEDS' letters at the city's railway station.

The five artists’ vibrant new designs now adorn the giant letters which take pride of place on the station’s concourse.

Leeds Dock donated an empty shipping unit over for the artists to use to spray their ‘abstract and psychedelic’ designs directly onto the letters over one weekend. The ‘Windows of Leeds’ project was brought to the city by Leeds Business Improvement District (LeedsBID) to show off the ever-evolving talent as well as create a colourful welcome for thousands of daily visitors.

Andrew Cooper, LeedsBID Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted to be unveiling the new look Windows of Leeds on the city, using this central platform to celebrate and showcase the diverse and talented artistic community here in Leeds.

“It is great to see one of the first installations unveiled by LeedsBID now firmly established as an iconic welcome, a familiar meeting point and a firm favourite as a photo backdrop.”

The artists who took part were graffiti artist Meds One, illustrator Matt Blak, street artist TONE, female duo Modes of Expression and graffiti and tattoo artist Cortisol Kid. Stephen Woowat, partner at design studio Something More, which led the project, said: “Each artist’s practice is deliberately tactile, so this was a chance to paint, draw and stencil directly onto the letters- something that hadn’t been done before.”
