Leeds and Wakefield: Booze bust for city bars

Bars in Leeds and Wakefield have been caught selling alcohol to underage drinkers.

West Yorkshire Police used young teenagers to make test purchases at 72 licensed premises. Eleven sites sold to the youngsters, including Ibiza Rock Bar on Call Lane in Leeds and Bar Street on Westgate, Bodega Bar on Lower York Street and Moodies on Little Westgate, all in Wakefield.

Eight premises were issued with 80 Fixed Penalty Notices, two with a summons to court while one is to have its licence reviewed.

Leeds District Licensing Officer Sgt Rob Fullilove said it was "not acceptable" that 15 per cent of premises tested sold alcohol to the youngsters.

"We will be carrying out further test purchases over the festive period and we urge licensees to work with us and keep alcohol out of the hands of young people," he said.
