Today the conditions caused havoc for both drivers and air passengers in the region. There were lengthy delays on the M62 after a multi-vehicle crash in thick fog.

Police were alerted to the accident at junction 27 of the eastbound M62 at Birstall just before 8am.

Two lanes of the eastbound M62 were closed after the accident and long delays were reported. Two drivers were taken to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment to minor injuries.

Flights were cancelled at Leeds Bradford Airport this morning as thick fog causes travel disruption across the UK and northern Europe.

Leeds Bradford Airport chiefs urged passengers due to fly today to check with their airline and allow plenty of time to travel to the airport.

A British Airways flight from Heathrow to Leeds Bradford and an Eastern Airways flight from Southampton were cancelled this morning.

And a scheduled outbound flight from Leeds Bradford Airport to Amsterdam was also cancelled.

Tony Hallwood, aviation development director at Leeds Bradford Airport, said: "Most of northern Europe has been blanketed in thick fog this morning. There are widespread cancellations across European airports.

"We are expecting the fog to clear slowly during the morning and the weather forecast is indicating it should be clear by later morning."

Some 129 flights – equivalent to 10 per cent of departures – were cancelled at Heathrow Airport while London City, Gatwick, Manchester, Liverpool John Lennon, Glasgow, Belfast and Southampton airports were also affected.

Fog was also causing delays on roads across Yorkshire this morning.

There were traffic queues being reported on the M1 northbound between junction 37 and junction 42.

And delays of 20 minutes are being reported on the M62 eastbound between junction 26 and junction 27.
