A Leeds business is offering primary schools free outdoor gardening kits in a bid to improve children’s maths skills.

Outdoor Classrooms Ltd, based just outside Pudsey, is offering hundreds of the free kits, which include a soil trough, trellising, seeds and measures so children can track how much the plants grow.

Business owner Richard Kirby, who has done similar give-aways before, explained: “We have called it ‘The Giant Garden Adventure: Free Beanstalks Give-Away’. The idea behind it is to improve the maths skills of primary school children, by allowing them to take part in something fun and practical. They will be able to plant seeds and watch them grow and measure how much they grow and keep diaries on their progress, while at the same time using mathematical language. The other benefit is it gets them outside into the fresh air and all the beneficial microbes in soil.”
