Leeds is one of the top spots for an impropmtu getaway break, according to new data.

A brand-new equation tool from LateRooms.com has revealed the best places in the country to escape real life and enjoy a spontaneous getaway.

Leeds came in at second place, just behind the nation’s first choice of Birmingham.

The research took into account the strength of the hotels on offer and factors like price, availability and whether pets were welcome too, inbound travel connections by car, train and bus and visitor experience looking at cultural attractions, foodie credentials, nightlife options and shopping scenes.

On the three credentials, each town and city were scored out of 30 with up to ten points awarded for each.

Sheffield and Halifax also featured in the top ten list.

Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said: “It’s fantastic to see that three fine Yorkshire towns and cities have made it onto this list.

“I’m not surprised they’ve been named as top spots for an impromptu break, because all three of them boast a fabulous mixture of rich heritage and contemporary lifestyle.

“And not only that, but the beauty of visiting Yorkshire’s urban destinations is that you’re never more than a few minutes away from the county’s lush landscapes offering wonderful walks, picturesque scenery and a friendly pub where you can refuel.”

The research also found Brits are heading off on more staycations than before, taking around four million more short-breaks per year than ten years ago. But 15 per cent surveyed had never been on a spontaneous getaway and 32 per cent haven’t been on an impromptu break for at least three years.
