‘Affordable’ flats plan revealed for landmark Leeds square

Plans have been revealed for a new apartment complex at the heart of a landmark Leeds square.

The proposed £2.5m scheme would see 23 one and two-bedroom flats built in a prominent position on a corner of Hanover Square, on the western edge of the city centre.

They would sit next to an existing extension of Grade II-listed Denison Hall, which dates back to the 18th century.

And the architects behind the scheme today pledged that the complex would be a fitting addition to the Georgian square.

Roger Stannard, from Brewster Bye, said: “The new building will replace an existing vacant building known as Kendal Carr that adjoins an extension of the renowned Grade II-listed Denison Hall, which was built in 1786 and sits in a higher position to the north of Hanover Square.

“Occupying such a prominent position, on the north west corner of Hanover Square, means it is essential that we get the design and quality of Kendal Carr right.

“As a result our contemporary new-build design draws its inspiration from the Georgian and Victorian architecture that surrounds it and we are confident it will complement its illustrious surroundings perfectly.”

Brewster Bye has drawn up the plans on behalf of the Leeds & Yorkshire Housing Association.

The association’s Joanna Chambers said the scheme would comprise seven one-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom “affordable” flats.

She also said that the existing Kendal Carr property, which was constructed in the 1970s, did not meet modern building control standards.

If the newly-submitted planning application wins approval, work could start in summer next year.

It is hoped the flats would then be ready for occupancy by autumn 2016.
