For safety reasons, two-way lights will be in operation on Abbey Road by the Kirkstall Forge development and Vesper Walk.

The temporary lights will be attended at peak times to try and “minimise disruption to motorists and commuters,” the company said.

Buses will continue to run as normal but temporary stops will be in use and pedestrian access on the Kirkstall Forge side of Abbey Road will be suspended during the work.

Yorkshire Water’s communications advisor Mark Allsop said: “We’re aware that we’ve worked in the area quite recently and hope that customers bear with us whilst we complete this essential work.

“We’ve liaised closely with the local highways department and bus companies to minimise disruption as much as possible.”

Businesses in the area will be open as usual.

Rush hour delays beset Abbey Road last year as various patches of the highway were worked on.

Last August, a £3m project to replace a 1.5km stretch of sewer pipe under the road was completed.

The old sewer had burst nine times within the previous five years, causing traffic congestion each time, so was replaced with more robust materials. Work was also aimed at reducing “pollution incidents” and traffic disruption.
