Previous years have seen women nominated for a variety of work including helping children engage with literature by creating a children’s literature festival or offering a safe and secure place for women who are isolated or emotionally vulnerable.

Each year the awards raise money for Wheatfields Hospice in Headingley, Leeds, one of seven hospices run by national charity Sue Ryder.

Mary Campbell, head of fundraising at the hospice, said: “If you have somebody who deserves recognition then please contact the hospice and nominate them to avoid disappointment. The awards are a chance to celebrate the differences, big or small, women have made whether that is professionally or in the community and always proves popular.”

This year, women can be nominated in eight categories - art, science and technology, business, education, sport, community, young achiever and courage.

One of the winners will then be named Overall Yorkshire Woman of Achievement 2017.

One of last year’s big winners was Rotherham grooming scandal whistleblower Jayne Senior, who was named overall Woman of Achievement 2016 as well as scooping the Community Impact of the Year accolade.

Guests at the 2016 gala ceremony - held at the Royal Armouries - included the original Calendar Girls, who were handed a special Yorkshire Rose award, actress Gaynor Faye, and Mike Tomlinson, the widower of heroic fundraiser Jane.
