Jo Cox hero honoured at local rugby match
the man who tried to save the life of MP Jo Cox has been honoured at a local rugby match.
Have-a-go-hero Bernard Kenny, 77, was stabbed in the stomach as he came to the aid of Mrs Cox outside the library in the centre of Birstall.
Mr Kenny was made the guest of honour by the Batley Bulldogs rugby league team at their derby match against Dewsbury Rams today.
The pensioner clasped a yellow sunflower on the pitch as the ground fell silent in memory of the Batley and Spenborough MP who was killed on June 16 outside her constituency surgery.
An online petition was set up calling on the Government to award Mr Kenny the George Cross - the highest bravery honour that can be given to non-military personnel.
And it has attracted more than 46,000 signatures.
