Police were last night still hunting for a man armed with an axe who went on the run after a car crash in Leeds.

The man – who detectives have warned should not be approached – is believed to have driven a van involved in a four-car crash in Sheepscar at 5.30pm on Saturday. (Feb 10)

He then fled the scene and was later spotted using an axe to steal a bike in Headingley for the next stage of his getaway.

Students and staff at the nearby Leeds Beckett University Headingley campus were put on lockdown while police launched a major operation to find the fugitive.

The University later confirmed people had been asked to “remain inside” while police cleared the area.

Supt Lisa Atkinson, of Leeds District Police, urged anyone who sees the man to contact police on 999.
