Tributes have been paid to a “one-off” Leeds University student who died in a freak accident at a wedding.
Gareth Mound, 19, is thought to have fallen 40ft down a staircase inside the Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club’s Sandy Park stadium during his summer break from the university, where he was studying economics.
A Facebook page set up in his honour describes him as ‘Gareth Mound – Entertainer’
It has been liked by nearly 1,200 people. The page describes Gareth, who was from Maidenhead, Berkshire, as “one of the funniest most energetic and sociable friend/family any of us could have hoped for”.
It adds: “He always thought he was invincible but I’m afraid to say that no one is and even the unexpected can happen whatever time.”
One friend, Liv Brooke, said Gareth had a “big heart”.
She added: “He has touched the lives of everybody despite how long a duration he knew them for and for that we should all thank our lucky stars that we had that chance.”
Katharine Phillips wrote: “The loss of any young life is shocking. But for anyone who didn’t know Gareth, you’ll probably begin to gather from the postings that he really was a one-off who will leave a massive hole in a huge number of people’s lives.”
In a message to his parents, Rod and Libby, Sally Gray added: “Gareth was a beautiful person and a credit to you both.”
Police confirmed that the Devon coroner has been informed of the death following the incident on August 1 and said an inquest would be held at a date to be fixed.
A spokesperson for Exeter City Council said: “We have been conducting an investigation into this tragic accident, liaising closely with the police and the management at Sandy Park Conference Centre.”
In a statement, Leeds University said: “We are very saddened to hear the news about Gareth and our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
