Housing firm's cash boost for Leeds Children's Heart Surgery Fund will help buy vital new equipment

A Leeds charity that supports children with heart disease has received a cash boost from a housebuilder to help buy more life-saving equipment.

Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire has handed the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund a £1,000 donation courtesy of its nationwide Community Champions scheme, which has already awarded over £300,000 so far this year.

The charity, which is based at Leeds General Infirmary, funds equipment, as well as providing travel expenses for families of children who are undergoing open-heart surgery.

Ellie Brown, corporate fundraiser for Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen to receive a £1,000 donation from Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire.

“This money will be used to purchase INR machines for children who have congenital heart disease.

“These machines are home-testing kits allowing the patients to monitor the thickness of blood, reducing the risk of strokes and other complications.

“The kits are life-changing as the reduction in hospital visits means less disruption to school and home-life for children and their parents.

“Most importantly, it helps children and their families feel in control, as these kits are not funded through the NHS we rely on generous donations such as Persimmon’s.”

Simon Whalley, sales director at Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire, said: “We are thrilled to be supporting this worthwhile charity.

“Their work not only helps the children in need, but extends to their families too in what is a difficult time for all concerned.

“If applicants were unsuccessful last month, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next Community Champion.”
