With rain forecast for the majority of the day and rivers in the region close to flooding, many flood warnings and alerts have been put in place by the Environment Agency.

Meanwhile a yellow weather warning has been issued for rain and snow in the north of England and Scotland, which includes a small part of North Yorkshire.

The Met Office's website says about Wednesday's weather: "Showers, merging into longer spells of rain, turning heavy and possibly thundery at times, with a chance of a few brighter spells between the showers. Light winds for much of the day, but strengthening from the north later. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

Things are set to get significantly drier and warmer on Thursday with very little rain forecast and cloudy spells for most of the day on Friday.
