Oakwood Farmers’ Market is seeking dedicated members of the community to help run and operate the market and safeguard its future.

It specialises in producing locally-grown fruit and vegetables and attracts hundreds of visitors every month from across Yorkshire.

Now the future of the market is uncertain due to the lack of available volunteers to help run it. Committee member and Oakwood resident Jill Jones, who helped to bring it into existence, has appealed for people to come forward.

She said: “I guess you could say that this is a form of succession planning.

“Over the past eight years, Oakwood Farmers’ Market has become a very popular shopping destination for the local community as well as visitors from further afield.

“However, whilst there is plenty of passion left in the market committee we obviously can’t go on forever so we’ve decided that it’s time to invite people from the local community to get involved and work with us to continue the great work that has been done so far.

“We want future generations to benefit from our original vision for many years to come.”

Pat Urry, Chair of the Market Committee, added: “The market really is an integral part of community life but what many people don’t realise is that it’s down to the hard work and commitment of a small team of volunteers that the market can take place in the first place.

“It’s also a show of support for many local independent farmers and entrepreneurs.

“There are so many ways to get involved, both behind the scenes and on Saturday morning market days”.

Oakwood Farmers’ Market has been running every third Saturday since 2008 at Oakwood Clock in Roundhay and currently has seven people on its committee.
