Help wanted from veterans

The city's military veterans are being invited to help create Yorkshire's biggest online collection of military memories.

Age UK has launched a series of ‘Military Memories’ events marking the start of a two-year programme to help reduce loneliness and improve wellbeing among the region’s veterans.

The events will enable veterans to share their stories, show off their old military memorabilia and reminisce over a cup of tea. The first Leeds Military Memories event will be held from 1pm to 3pm on November 10 at The Harrison Room, Age UK Leeds, Mark Lane.

Alison Brook, Age UK Yorkshire and Humber aged veterans project manager, said: “We want to reduce isolation and improve the lives of 750 veterans over three years. The Military Memories events will not only bring our veterans together and enable them to share precious memories, but it will also enable them to make connections with local Age UKs and benefit from a wealth of services to ultimately improve their lives, socially, emotionally and physically.”

Age UK has commissioned a series of short films with the Yorkshire Film Archive to form a reminiscence pack, looking at the 1940s and 1950s Britain.

Events will enable veterans to share their stories and images of their medals, pay books, photos - indeed anything from their military days. Co-ordinators will help document the stories and upload photos of memorabilia to a dedicated website. Primarily, events are for those who have served in the military at some point in their lives and were born before 1950, but if people served at another time or have a family member who was in the forces, they are welcome to attend. To attend contact Alison Brook on 07973 943232 or email [email protected].
