Help at hand for Brits who believe they cannot afford to buy a home

New research suggests that over quarter of a million non-home owners in the UK seem to have given up their dream of buying a place of their own over the past year.

For the first time in five years, the number of people aspiring to purchase a property has fallen.

The results of an annual survey from the HomeOwners Alliance and BLP Insurance put high property prices as the top concern among potential purchasers (86 per cent) followed by saving for a deposit (85 per cent) and the availability of homes (80 per cent).

Getting onto the housing ladder is also a concern with 89 per cent of people overall.

However, help is at hand to try and restore customer confidence when it comes to promoting the affordability and reality of buying a first home in East Riding.

Developer Linden Homes East Yorkshire have already enjoyed huge success in assisting numerous customers meet the dream of owning a new home through the Help To Buy scheme – and in particular, quashing concerns about raising a deposit.

The Help to Buy scheme was launched back in April 2013 and applies to a range of potential purchasers, including first-time and next-time buyers on properties up to the value of £600,000.

Buyers are required to provide just a five per cent deposit to then borrow a further 20 per cent from the Government in the form of an equity loan – leaving them needing only a 75 per cent mortgage agreed by their bank or building society to secure their home.

Julie Hubbard, sales manager at Linden Homes East Yorkshire, said: “We have been successfully helping customers to buy their dream property through the Help to Buy scheme for four years. It is a shame that aspirations have taken a dip – but we would urge people who are unsure on the affordability issue to come and talk to us in the first instance.”
