Heckmondwike man tragically drowned during family holiday in Fuerteventura

A man drowned after being swept out to sea during a family swim on holiday in the Canary Islands.

Carl Lee Thompson, 36, of Leeds Old Road, Heckmondwike, died on the evening August 10 in Fuerteventura’s Corralejo resort.

An inquest at Bradford Coroners Court today (Tuesday) heard that Dewsbury-born Mr Thompson, his partner and children had flown out for a week-long holiday on August 8.

Two days later, they had visited the resort’s town and then returned to their hotel, which was located on a beach, for a swim.

The group got into difficulties after a strong undercurrent dragged them away from the shore, said coroner’s officer Chris Dalby.

Mr Thompson’s partner managed to get out of the water and raised the alarm with lifeguards. The rescue team managed to save her 16-year-old brother, but Mr Thompson was unresponsive.

Coroner Martin Fleming adjourned the inquest until December 15, when statements by the Spanish authorities will be available.
