the fundraising target to help a blind toddler have pioneering treatment which could change his life has been raised.

Lyle Duckworth’s parents launched a fundraising drive to pay for the £25,000 cost of stem cell injections in Thailand.]

Now that target has been raised to £30,000 to enable the 23-month-old to have more therapy.

His mum Paula McGregor, from Whinmoor, Leeds, said the fundraising had gone brilliantly.

“It’s been fantastic, really good,” she said.

“It just seems like it’s taken such a short time.”

Lyle was born 15 weeks prematurely and had to be resuscitated at birth.

He weighed just 1lb 13ozs and afterwards was on a ventilator for six weeks,

On four separate occasions, doctors asked his parents if they wanted turn off the machines keeping him alive as Lyle was so ill, which they refused to do.

The toddler has defied predictions and can breathe and feed on his own.

But he suffered bleeding on the brain, which has left him blind, and he has cerebral palsy, which badly affects his movement.

Doctors in Leeds can’t offer him any more treatment for his sight, so his parents researched what other options might be available.

It is hoped the procedures in Thailand, which are not available in this country, will help the youngster to see, as well as improving his movement.

After Lyle was accepted for treatment, his family started the fundraising campaign, which was also publicised in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

A range of events have taken place, such as fundraising evenings, walkers – including Lyle’s dad – doing the Yorkshire Three Peaks.

The most recent feat was a cycle ride from Leeds to Scarborough completed by 28 riders.

Paula thanked everyone who took part in the tough challenge, as well as everyone who has contributed to the fundraising.

She also thanked Leeds-based therapist Clare Barker, who has been providing Lyle with free muscle-stimulating Bowen Therapy treatments which his mum said were having a major impact.
