A nine-year-old and her mum are looking for support to help them in a canal cycling challenge.

Harriet Williams and her mum Heather are gearing up for the 127-mile ride from Liverpool to Leeds to raise cash for a Leeds hospital ward.

The feat, which they will undertake at the end of September, is the latest fundraiser in memory of Harriet’s dad Hylton, who died in February 2012 from the blood cancer lymphoma. Already she has raised over £3,500 for ward 88 at St James’s Hospital.

Heather, from Horsforth, said her daughter was already a regular cyclist: “Training began about two months ago properly.

“She cycles three miles to school uphill most of the way every day. We’ve stepped this up by doing small 10 mile rides weekly, followed by stepping this up to 15, 20 then 26 mile rides, getting as far afield as Keighley so far.”

However their training has been affected by an injury Heather suffered in a cycling accident, so the pair are currently building up stamina with regular swims.

She said they were looking for help with the cost of swim sessions, transport for them and their team to the start of the ride, corporate sponsorship for the three nights accommodation en route and a meal on their return to Leeds.
