The wild ways of the World Wide Web have been brought to live in a touring digital art exhibition launched in Leeds.
Trinity Shopping Centre is hosting the launch of what organisers have dubbed a “ground breaking” art installation before it sets off on a national tour.
The internationally-recognised artists were at the shopping centre to explain their digital art to shoppers and visitors, in the exhibition called ‘Digital Zoo - Life from the World Wild Web’.
The work included the ‘Leeds wall’ - a snapshot of Tweets and status updates from people using social networks within a one-mile radius of Trinity.
Artists ‘Thomson & Craighead’ listened to the collective consciousness of local people over a two-week period to print out and paste on to the shopping centre wall.
The aim of the interactive exhibition is to explore how the internet and social media have changed our culture.
Some of the exhibits have previously been exhibited at Furtherfield Gallery, in north London, which was the capital’s first dedicated gallery for international, networked, new media art.
Ruth Catlow, curator for Furtherfield, which has produced the exhibition in partnership with The CultureCode Initiative, said: “We have chosen Leeds to launch the ground breaking national touring exhibition, Digital Zoo - life from the world wild web, for its distinctive local culture.
“The theme of Leeds runs strongly through some of the artworks, such as Leeds Wall which is an installation displaying the online collective consciousness of people around Leeds.
“Trinity Leeds shopping centre was a perfect place for us to begin the tour as we wanted to emphasise how digital art can work in contemporary and commercial culture, the shopping centre is the perfect example of this. The artworks fit so perfectly in the modern surroundings.”
A bespoke commission for Digital Zoo, Mall of The Wild by Transnational Temps is a completely new artwork which launched at Trinity Leeds. The mobile app game challenges players, equipped with a map of the shopping centre and a smart phone, to go on a hunt around Trinity Leeds to find fake wildlife. With only a short time limit, players must find representations of wild animals throughout the shopping centre. Their wildlife documentary photos can then be shared via social media. Digital Zoo is supported by Arts Council England through the Strategic Touring programme. It runs at Trinity Leeds from February 14-23 February before touring England.
It will also appear at the White Rose Shopping Centre August 29 to September 07.
The exhibition is accompanied by a series of creative workshops for children aged 6-11 years old inspired by Crow_Sourcing.
These will take place in the Trinity Leeds Customer Service Lounge on the first floor on Saturday February 15 at 11.30am, 2pm and 4pm; Sunday February 16 at 11am, 12.30pm and 3pm, and Sun February 23 at noon, 1.30pm and 3pm.
The Trinity Leeds exhibition is open Monday to Saturday 11am to 7pm and Sunday 11am to 5pm.
