A group of Leeds residents are raising funds for homelessness charity Emmaus Leeds by not washing their hair for a month.
Throughout the month of April the team of four friends are participating in a ‘Greasy Locks’ fundraiser to raise money for Emmaus Leeds. The group have set themselves a fundraising target of £500 and are appealing for support from residents and businesses across the city.

Ann Hall, organiser of the ‘Greasy Locks’ fundraiser for Emmaus Leeds, said: “The reason I decided to do this was because, when I was having a shower washing my hair, I realised how I take this luxury for granted. The same day I noticed how many people are now on the streets.
“I wanted to do something to help to raise money and raise awareness so I decided to sacrifice this one luxury. This is just one of the many problems that homeless people face. I chose Emmaus because I know of the fantastic work people here do and how this can potentially change people’s lives.”

Emmaus Leeds supports 26 formerly homeless people by providing them with a stable home and meaningful work for as long as they need it. The charity has its main community building and social enterprise on St Mary’s Street, and also runs a stall at Kirkgate Market.
Donald Forrester, Chief Executive of Emmaus Leeds, said: “We were delighted when Ann got in touch to say that she wanted to support the work of Emmaus Leeds with this unique fundraising idea. This support is greatly appreciated as it not only raises funds, it also helps to raise awareness of our work to break the desperate cycle of homelessness.”
