Go behind the scenes with Leeds soap set tour

It has been the scene to some of soap history's biggest dramas.

From the horrifying helicopter disaster that saw major characters killed off to the Christmas Day murder of businessman Tom King.

Millions of Emmerdale fans have been kept on the edge of their seats over the last four decades with the twists and turns of village life.

But now viewers are being given the chance to explore for themselves behind the scenes at the television set in north Leeds.

The site at the Harewood Estate will open its gates as cast and crew down their scripts for various dates throughout the year to allow guests to walk the village’s streets.

Enjoy a trip to Home Farm or have a look around the landmark Woolpack pub with a series of guided tours complete with fascinating facts about the Yorkshire-based soap opera.

The tours will be held on selected dates from Saturday, April 30, until Saturday, October 29.

John Whiston, managing director of Continuing Drama and head of ITV North, said: “The village set is a unique and special place and Emmerdale is excited to be able to show it off to a select number of visitors.

“I’m sure the public will enjoy seeing it as much as we enjoy working there.” Emmerdale village as it is today, was purpose built in the grounds of Harewood House over 17 years ago.

The popular programme’s former location of Esholt became such a draw with visitors that filming scenes soon became impossible for the team.

Until now, its secluded and somewhat secret new home has been steeped in security to stop general public access.

The YEP reported plans to allow the tours of the Emmerdale set were given the green light by Leeds City Council chiefs last year.

FACTFILE

Emmerdale fans have endured more than four decades of twists and turns.

From affairs and crimes to weddings and The Woolpack – the soap opera has seen millions of fans glued to the screen.

Among the gripping storylines was the love triangle between brothers Andy and Robert Sugden and Andy’s wife Katie.

There was also the famous storm which killed Tricia Dingle in 2004.
