Gigs rescheduled as Leeds music venue closes over summer

Have your say

A popular music venue in Leeds has announced it will close its doors this weekend – and is moving its scheduled gigs to other sites.

The Cockpit in Leeds city centre will host its last club night – called The Garage – on Saturday, July 19, before closing for the whole of the summer for ‘essential maintenance work’ to be carried out.

In a statement, which was posted on the venue’s website and Facebook page on Monday, it said: “The Cockpit will be closing for essential maintenance work for the remainder of the summer.

“The last club night will be The Garage on Sat 19th July, we hope you will all come down and join us.”

It added: “The venue will remain closed until September 2014.

“An official date is still to be confirmed but we will let you know as soon as possible when we plan to reopen.”

Gigs that were originally scheduled to take place at The Cockpit are now being moved to other music venues across Leeds.

The statement continued: “Any gigs taking place during the closure will be moved to new venues, please await advice from your ticket outlet about the revised venue, we will also update the information on our website with revised/replacement venues.”

A spokeswoman from The Cockpit told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “It is essential maintenance work that is going on. The venue will look the same.”

Gigs that were scheduled to take place from July 20 until mid-September have now been moved to other venues. Yesterday, The Cockpit announced that Catfish And The Bottlemen had confirmed a gig at the venue on November 9.

Over the years, The Cockpit has attracted big names including Amy Winehouse, Coldplay, Queens of the Stone Age, Flaming Lips, The Libertines, Mars Volta, My Chemical Romance and Bloc Party.

Changes to scheduled gigs:

Several gigs have been moved from The Cockpit to other venues whilst the maintenance work is being carried out.

Some of the gigs affected include:

July 26: Bromheads and Citizen – Brudenell Social Club.

July 29: Andrew WK – The Wardrobe

August 20: William Control – Brudenell Social Club

September 6: Superheaven – Brudenell Games Room

September 13: Coasts – Brudenell Social Club.

According to The Cockpit website, tickets that have already been bought will still be valid for entry at the new venues.
