Morley Arts Festival organisers have announced that Germaine Greer will no longer appear “for reasons beyond our control”.

The outspoken academic was due to take the stage at Morley Town Hall on October 31 for The Disappearing Woman event.

The news comes the cultural event gets set to get underway on September 27, with a wide range of headliners will appear during 35 days, including former political high-flyer Michael Portillo and one late addition – celebrity scientist Professor Robert Winston. Festival director Rachael Kennedy said: “We feel this additional event will bring a different dimension to the festival with an informative and insightful talk.”

To celebrate the event’s 10 year anniversary, organisers have changed Morley Literature Festival into Morley Arts Festival and added 28 days to the programme.

It will include walks, talks, workshops, performances and activities boasting many different art forms. Prof Winston will appear at the town hall as part of his book tour for Modifying Humans: Where Will Genetics Stop? on October 28 from 7pm.

He is a Professor of Science and Society and Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College London. Prof Winston is also celebrated for his TV presenting – he was the face of shows such as Superhuman, Human Instinct and the BAFTA award-winner The Human Body. Organisers have said the Germaine Greer event has been cancelled “for reasons beyond our control.” People with tickets for this event can have a ticket to see late addition Professor Robert Winston, scheduled to appear on October 28, or a refund.
