Gearing up for work at Leeds station

So it is little surprise that the carriageway at Leeds Bus Station is in need of some tender loving care.

And this Monday work will start on a major resurfacing project that is expected to take until October to complete – but transport bosses are assuring passengers that any disruption will be well worth it in the long run.

Diane Groom, assistant director of customer services at the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, said: “Leeds Bus Station is one of West Yorkshire’s busiest, used by around 30,000 people and served by over 1,200 buses per day, so as it approaches [the 20th anniversary of its redevelopment], it is ready for resurfacing.

“This and other planned improvements will also complement the regeneration work being carried out on the Victoria Gate development next to the bus station.

“Ultimately this project is about providing passengers with smoother, more comfortable journeys and by phasing the work, we hope to make the process itself as smooth as possible for our customers with the minimum of disruption.”

Phase one of the project will last for approximately four weeks from Monday.

Stands one to six will be closed during that period, with services using alternative stops at the station or in nearby St Peter’s Street.

The Metro travel centre at the bus station will remain open throughout the work, as will businesses based at the site.

Updates on the progress of the scheme will be displayed on screens and posters at the station and also on the www.wymetro.com website and the @MetroTravelNews feed on Twitter.
