FAMILIES at the Garforth and District Lions Club’s annual Summer Gala will be treated to a Tour de France-themed parade.

The jam-packed event on Sunday, June 29, will include a fancy dress cycle parade in honour of the world’s biggest cycle race, which comes to the city on July 5.

The gala at Glebelands playing fields on Ninelands Lane will also include a craft fair, a music arena with performances by local bands, a family arena, a fairground and various stalls.

A car boot sale will be held at 8am and the gala attractions will start at 11am, with the cycle parade kicking off at 12pm.

The Summer Gala will be the first official event for newly elected Garforth and District Lions president Mark Dobson.

Having been a Lion since 2003, Mark was also president of the club in 2008.

He said: “It is a huge honour to be elected to serve a second term as president of Garforth and District Lions Club.

“It is my aim to ensure that we as a club deliver our key annual projects of the Summer Gala, Community Bonfire and Santa Street Collection for the people served in Garforth and the surrounding district, whilst raising money enabling the Lions to undertake their service work.

“I am also looking to continue new initiatives, such as our popular beer festival on August 16, which is now in its third year.

“My first event as president will be the club’s Summer Gala on June 29.

“I am sure we will have another great year working in the local community and thank the local people for their continuing support and generosity.”

He added: “I would like to thank the outgoing president Trevor Kell for his dedicated service.”
