A GAS firm has apologised to motorists after emergency repairs caused major traffic jams in Leeds city centre.

Engineers from Northern Gas Networks have been working on Victoria Road, near Bewleys Hotel, after another team working in the area reported the smell of gas on Sunday. (Nov 11)

The urgent repairs have required the closure of traffic lanes on the one-way system just off the M621, including a bus lane, which is expected to re-open tonight.

Richard Hynes-Cooper, customer operations area manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We are aware that this is a very busy road and due to the location of the gas escape, there have been periods where motorists have experienced significant delays.

“We’d like to thank the public for their cooperation and apologise for any disruption caused as a result of these emergency gas repairs.”

He added: “We are doing everything we can to minimise disruption to motorists.”
