Full moon to shine on Christmas for first time in 38 years

The first festive full moon in nearly 40 years will light up the skies on Christmas Day.

Star-gazers will be treated to the rare phenomenon for the first time since 1977.

Experts say the celestial occurrence, known as a Cold Full Moon, will not happen again on Christmas Day until 2034.

It is the latest rare phenomenon to occur this year after the Super Blood Moon filled the skies in September.

The moon was unusually close to the Earth on September 28 and appeared bigger and brighter than normal.

Within an hour, the Earth crossed between the sun and the moon in a total lunar eclipse.
