A FREE parking scheme is set to be launched in Wakefield district in the run up to Christmas.

Parking in Wakefield Council-owned car parks in Wakefield, Castleford and Pontefract will be free after 3pm on the four Thursdays before Christmas.

The Council’s on-street parking spaces and its own car parks, excluding Merchant Gate multi-storey in Wakefield, will be free from 3pm on Thursdays starting next week.

Coun David Dagger, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for transportation and highways, said: “We have offered free Christmas parking in our car parks for some years now. We are confident that it does encourage people to come into our shopping centres. We hope it will do the same this year and look forward to welcoming visitors.”

Signs will be displayed on or next to parking payment machines to publicise the dates for free parking. The locations of council-owned car parks can be found at

The free parking offer does not include privately-run car parks.
