A community event taking place this weekend will give people the chance to share their memories of the former Gipton Fire Station building.

Arts and health charity Space2 is putting together an archive telling the story of the fire station and the part it played in local life prior to its closure last year.

Staff from the charity will be on hand at the old station building and the nearby St Albans Social Club from 1pm to 4pm this Saturday to hear residents’ tales. The programme for the event also includes live music and dance classes as well as stilt-walking and cooking demonstrations and a display of firefighting equipment.

The old fire station is set to be fully reopened as a community centre next year and Space2 intends to create a gallery area dedicated to its former use.
