The world of football has said an emotional goodbye to former Leeds United manager Jimmy Armfield.

The sporting legend and broadcasting icon’s funeral cortege passed through Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road ground before a private service at St Peter’s Church in the seaside town.

Mr Armfield died at Trinity Hospice in Bispham in the early hours of January 22, after a long fight with cancer. He was 82.

The humble hero captained Blackpool - to this day remaining their record appearance holder - and England, forming part of the World Cup winning squad in 1966.

In 1974, he took the helm at Leeds United replacing Brian Clough, and led them to the European Cup Final in which they lost 2–0 to Bayern Munich.

More recently Mr Armfield would have been best known now for his work for BBC Radio 5 Live, something he carried out for more than 35 years.
