THE former owner of a well-known Leeds restaurant which went into administration has spoken of his distress at losing the popular eating place.
The Flying Pizza on Street Lane, Roundhay, has been bought by the San Carlo Group for an undisclosed sum.
As reported in the YEP, the family-owned restaurant chain has pledged to spend £1m refurbishing it.
Former owner Martin Pickles, above, who ran the Flying Pizza for a decade, said he was saddened.
He told the YEP: “It’s a shame that things have come to this but I wish San Carlo the very best in the future.”
Mr Pickles said that the recent bad winter had been a major factor in the loss of the restaurant as the snow kept customers away.
He said that takings had plummeted from £30,000 a week to £10,000.
Mr Pickles added: “This recession has been awful.”
He said that he had been worried that the 29 restaurant staff would lose their jobs but the San Carlo Group has said that they were safe.
Mr Pickles said: “It’s been a worry that they would be gainfully employed.
“I really do wish everybody the very best.”
Mr Pickles said that he had tried to put in a bid to buy the restaurant once it was in administration but the San Carlo bid had been a better one.
