A YOUNG gymnast has launched a drive to raise funds so she can travel abroad to compete after she was selected to represent Great Britain.

Ellie Pearson, 12, of Ackworth, near Pontefract, has been picked to compete for Team GB in tumbling – which combines gymnastics and trampolining.

She will take part in her first international competition, the Loule Cup, in Portugal in September.

And Ellie is hoping to be one of four who will represent team GB at the World Tumbling Championships at Daytona Beach, Florida in November.

The sport of tumbling does not get any funding, so to be able to compete, Ellie needs to raise £1,000 for the Portugal trip and another £2,500 to take part in the world championships. Her mum Diane Pearson said: “It would be devastating for it to be just within her grasp and miss out just because we didn’t have the money.”

Ellie, wil be running a tombola stall at Ackworth Gala tomorrow.
