Flaming fantastic! Thousands set to flock to public bonfires in Leeds

Leeds City Council is organising public bonfires this Friday at Roundhay Park, East End Park, Woodhouse Moor, Rothwell’s Springhead Park, Middleton Park and Bramley Park.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to flock to the Roundhay Park event, where the bonfire on Soldiers Field will be lit at 7.30pm with a fireworks display to follow at 8pm.

The bonfires at the other five events will be lit at 7pm, with their fireworks starting at 7.30pm.

Coun Lucinda Yeadon, the council’s executive member for environment and sustainability, said: “It fills us with great pride that families of all generations have grown up attending and continue to enjoy our public bonfires as part of the city’s Bonfire Night celebrations.

“I am delighted to say that once again we will be providing six public bonfires across the city, which not only offer a fantastic firework display but also a wonderful and safe atmosphere.

“All of our bonfires are very popular, so we would ask people to travel to their chosen bonfire early, to avoid any disappointment.

“On a final note, I would like to personally thank our parks and countryside team who do such an amazing job each year organising all of our public bonfires.”

The White Rose Shopping Centre will be sponsoring the Springhead Park and Middleton Park events once again this year.

Centre marketing manager Nikki Appleton said: “The sponsorship of the bonfire nights at Springhead Park and Middleton Park has become an annual event that the team at White Rose look forward to supporting each year.

“It provides a great opportunity for us to engage with our local audience and to give something back to the community.

“Our visitors are very loyal to the centre and supporting the bonfires alongside the council gives us the chance to talk to school groups with our bonfire drawing competition in the lead up to November 3, as well as exposure to all ages on the night.”
