A prosecco tap in the womenswear department, a fridge with a camera in case you forget your shopping list at the supermarket, over 1,300 lights in just one department and at least 500 pairs of shoes.
This is a taste of what Leeds shoppers will be able to expect from the £37 million John Lewis store that has changed the face of Victoria Quarter - and divided opinion in the city.
Commenting recently on its appearance online, YEP reader Christine Fletcher Noble said: “Leeds has such beautiful architecture, lovely old buildings then they put two awful looking buildings which look like they’ve dropped from outer space.”
Gregg Nicholson disagreed and added: “It really looks stunning. Everyone should be proud of this beautiful development in Leeds rather than knock it.”
Love or hate the concept that architects have tried to create - a reflection on Leeds’ textile heritage - it is the inside that will do the talking, as well as the 550 jobs the site has created, with 80 per cent of those going to people from Leeds.
The Leeds John Lewis is only the second in the company portfolio to house gadgets such as being able to look in your fridge via a mobile phone app and having a travel agent in store.
It is also over five floors as opposed to the usual John Lewis format of four, in order that it can fit in all the extra services from a beauty spa to an office that community groups can apply to use.
Manager James Prince told the YEP: “We have been talking about this for 15 years and we are now just two weeks away.
“The shop fit is all done, we just need to put some stock in it. We are getting our deliveries over a ten day window and then we have 150 people on site from around the business who are here to merchandise, put price tags on, put clothes on hangers and sign off each fixture.
“The biggest challenge has been creating something so special from a John Lewis point of view and getting people to come and shop in it.”
