Five-year-old Leeds United fan Toby Nye shortlisted for Player of the Year Awards for cancer battle

Five-year-old Leeds United fan Toby Nye has been receiving treatment for bone marrow cancer neuroblastoma after a fundraising campaign backed by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Leeds United’s Player of the Year Awards take place on May 4 in the Gowing Law Centenary Pavilion at Elland Road.

The club will be presenting fan-voted awards for the Goal of the Season, Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year.

The nominees

Player of the Year: Ezgjan Alioski, Pablo Hernandez, Kemar Roofe, Samuel Saiz and Toby Nye

Young Player of the Year: Paudie O’Connor, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Tom Pearce and Ronaldo Vieira

Goal of the Season Award: Alioski and Hernandez both have two efforts nominated for the Goal of the Season Award, along with Pierre-Michel Laosgga and Leeds United Ladies star Bridie Hannon.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Leeds United Foundation.

In March, the Yorkshire Evening Post reported how Toby Nye has been treated with specialist £200,000 antibody treatment.

Tests have shown five-year-old Toby’s bone marrow is free of cancer neuroblastoma for the first time since he was diagnosed on his fourth birthday in January 2017.

Toby, of Osmondthorpe, is undergoing the antibody treatment not routinely available on the NHS at Leeds General Infirmary after a major fundraising drive backed by Leeds United and YEP readers.

Toby started school at Victoria Primary Academy in east Leeds in March.

His mother Stacey Worsley, 31, said the family had anxiously awaited the latest results because previous chemotherapy treatment had failed to clear the cancer from Toby’s bone marrow. She said: “I could have cried with happiness when the nurse called and told me the results. It is absolutely amazing, we are so overwhelmed.”
