Five West Yorkshire road death tragedies in a week

A driver was killed in a smash in Pontefract on Sunday – bringing the total death toll on the region's roads to five in the last week.

The man in his 30s suffered fatal injuries after the Peugeot he was driving careered off Knottingley Road and hit a lamppost in the accident just before 1pm.

Sunday's tragedy was the fifth fatality on roads in West and North Yorkshire over the Christmas and New Year holidays.

A teenage boy died after he was hit by a car in Otley town centre on New Year's Eve.

The 16-year-old pedestrian was struck by the vehicle just after 9pm near the White Swan pub on Boroughgate.

Pub-goers from the White Swan attempted to help the boy, who had been flung six feet over metal fencing.

A police spokesman said he was taken to hospital where he died a short time later.

The driver of the car, a 20-year-old local man was arrested and later released on police bail.

A Harrogate couple – both health service workers – were killed in a crash on the B6165 Ripley to Pateley Bridge road in North Yorkshire just after 1pm on Tuesday December 28.

Police have named the victims as Nathan Fielding, 32, of Camwal Terrace, Starbeck, and Kate Henderson, 37, of Regent Avenue.

Mr Fielding worked at Harrogate District Hospital as a laboratory scientist. His partner was a mental health outreach worker.

North Yorkshire Police want to hear from anyone who witnessed the accident involving the couple's Peugeot 306 and an Audi A8.

Paying tribute to Mr Fielding, Harrogate District Hospital's medical director Dr Carl Gray, said: "We remember Nathan as a cheerful and hard-working laboratory scientist who greatly enhanced the lives of all his colleagues and friends."

A man and a woman in their 50s, who were travelling in the Audi, were treated at Harrogate District Hospital for serious injuries.

And a man was injured in a three-car smash near Leeds city centre on New Year's Day.

Firefighters had to cut the man free from one of the vehicles after the accident just after 7am on Kirkstall Road.

The injured man was taken by ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary.
