1. History-maker wins her second Rio gold

Leed’s own Kadeena Cox earned herself a place in the history books by winning her second gold of the 2016 Rio Paralympic games after she stormed her way to victory with a record-breaking 400m run. Cox had already become the first Briton to win medals in two sports at the same Paralympics since 1988, after bagging bronze in the T38 100 metres. Yesterday, the 25-year-old with multiple sclerosis won her second medal in this games after winning track cycling’s C4-5 last week. She had dreams of making the Olympic team in Rio, only to suffer stroke symptoms in May 2014 after competing in Loughborough.

2. Travellers set up camp at pitch and pub site

Travellers have set up camp on the site of a former pub in South Leeds. They are believed to be the same group who had previously been camped at the Glen Road Recreation Ground in Morley. The Glen Road ground is used as a bitch by a morley Glen Juniors football team. The council said it was aware of the travellers on the White Bear pub site, and that it is in talks with the landlord and other relevant parties.

3. Campaigners consent motion

Leeds Beckett graduate Amy Cousens has appealed to leeds City Council to change licensing rules, so bars nad clubs must display posters with advice about sexual consent. She also called for bars to brief staff on sexual consent so they can handle assault complaints. The 21-year-old presented the motion to councillors alongside fellow campaigners at Leeds Civic Hall. Councillors voted to refer the matter to the Environment and Housing committee.

4. Leeds school causes Twitter storm by inviting pupils to Manchester United game

A local secondary school has sparked anger among football fans in Leeds by offering their parents a chance to send their children to watch Leeds United’s bitter rivals Manchester United. The invitation sent out by Horsforth School caused a stir on twitter amongst Leeds supporters who objected to the idea of sending a school in the city to Old Trafford. The match in question is Manchester United’s Europa League tie with Ukrainian side Zorya Luhansk. Leeds has a long rivalry with Manchester United, and are angered that a Leeds school would promote a chance to go to Old Trafford as a school trip.

5. New retail park plans unveiled

Plans for a new £15m retail development which could create up to 149 jobs on a disused brownfield site have been revealed. A new Lidl and B&M Homestore are at the heart of the plans for the former Benyon Centre site, a former bus terminus alongside Middleton ring Road in Leeds. It will be transformed into a new retail destination called St George’s Retail Park. Along with the Lidl store and B&M home store, there will also be six other shop units of varying sizes as part of the plans.
