First Kirkstall Art trail is a big hit

THE FIRST Kirstall Art Trail has been hailed a “great success” after attracting hundreds of visitors.

They enjoyed works created by more than 40 artists at 22 venues across Kirkstall on Saturday during the first of what is hoped will become an annual event.

Kirkstall Abbey and its museum and visitor centre were among sites taking part in the free trail, which was organised by volunteer Amy Thompson.

Miss Thompson, 27, secretary of Stephen’s Community Garden, Kirkstall, said: “It was definitely a great success. I have been inundated with positive comments, thanks and people inspired to be involved next year.

“Everyone is already asking about what will be happening in 2016 and many people have commented on the warm, friendly and hospitable community we have here in Kirkstall.

“It has been estimated that we received approximately 500 visitors throughout the day across the different venues, which is incredible and far beyond our expectations.”

Visitors took to social media to give their reactions to the art trail.

Lola Wilson tweeted: “we met neighbours we didn’t even know we had, saw parts of our town we’d never seen before.”

Jewellery designer Emma Swailes tweeted: “Amy and the hosts and artists have done something magical.”

And Amber Rithalia tweeted: “Wish we’d had time to see everything on @KirkstallArt trail, such fun.”

Activities on offer included mono-printing and weaving workshops for all ages to learn new creative skills and take away their own original art on the day.

Other venues involved in the trail included Kirkstall Bridge Inn, Hollybush Conservation Centre and St Stephens Church and church hall.
