More than a thousand people have applied for jobs at the new casino opening in Victoria Gate.
The first wave of appointed employees, 35 new people all from the Leeds area have embarked on one of three, six-week ‘Casino School’ courses in the city prior to the VIP opening of the super casino early next year.
Casino bosses say half fall into the NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) category.
The intensive, 180-hour course covers three main games: roulette, blackjack, and poker, as well as gambling legislation, social responsibility, customer service, health and safety, and odds-based mathematics.
Teide Heaton, 21, from Hyde Park in Leeds, was previously unemployed before being offered a role at the casino.
He said: “I’m a sociable person and I’ve found a job that fits me perfectly. It’s a big step up for me and I’m learning so much.”
With a capacity of 1,400, Victoria Gate Casino, being created on the top of John Lewis, will be the third biggest in the UK.
