Vaisakhi is both the Sikh New Year festival and the anniversary of the founding of the Khalsa in 1699.

The Khalsa, which means pure, are Sikhs who underwent a sacred ceremony initiated by the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh in 1699.

Vaisakhi was originally a harvest festival in the Punjab before it became the Sikh’s most important festival.

It is also thanksgiving day by the farmers and to pray for future prosperity.
